Dumped Amazon Prime for Walmart+? 8 Ways to Get the Most Out of Your Membership
Amazon Prime offers two-day delivery, a video streaming service, photo storage, PC gaming and more, all for $119 a year or $12.99 a month. But it got competition in late 2020 with the launch of Walmart+, which offers similar perks for $98 a year or $12.95 a month.
With a Walmart+ subscription, you get free local delivery and shipping, early access to exclusive offers and releases, discounted prescriptions, cheaper gas, and contactless checkout. If you've signed up or are considering a switch from Prime, here's what you need to know about Walmart's subscription service.
1. Save yourself a few dollars

Like many subscription services before it, Walmart+ offers monthly and yearly plans. Switch month-to-month for $12.95 or pay upfront for a full year for $98. Which one is best depends on your shopping habits. If you're a regular at Walmart and know you'll be returning in the next 12 months, the annual subscription will save you $57. Just looking for shipping and shopping benefits over the holidays? Monthly may be the way to go. (For comparison, an annual Amazon Prime subscription saves you $36 over a monthly plan.)
2. Early shopping

A Walmart+ perk is early access to special promotions and events, from Black Friday deals to game console refills. Walmart+ members who sign up at the appointed time may be able to snag a discounted must-have item or gadgets that have been in short supply, like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Keep an eye on what's on you via the Early Access storefront due.
3. Beware of the free trial version

The early access perks have a catch: they're not available to Walmart+ members who use the service's 15-day free trial. However, there is a workaround: log in and start paying immediately to bypass the 15-day free trial.
On the sign-up page, scroll down to Early Access and click Start paid membership Button. You will be taken to a checkout page where you can immediately begin paying for a Walmart+ membership. (The fine print on this page should read "By signing up, you agree that we can charge the above fee to your selected payment card" and not "By signing up, you agree to this after the 15-day trial period We'll charge the above fee to your selected payment card." The latter is displayed when you click the 15-day free trial button.)
4. Set a home store

Walmart customers in the retailer's delivery zone (sorry, NYC) can have groceries and other items delivered right to their doorstep. Non-Walmart+ members pay a delivery fee of between $8 and $10. Walmart+ has no delivery fee for orders over $35 ($6 fee for orders under $35).
Items are selected from nearby Walmart stores. Set up your home store at account > update store under your selected Walmart store. Add your zip code and select the nearest store from the list. Then when you want to select items for local delivery, open the Collection & Shipping filter and click Delivery from the menu. Add items to your cart, then select Reserve a time to set a delivery time.
5. Filter for free shipping

Walmart offers all customers free two-day shipping on orders $35 or more. Walmart+ doesn't have a $35 minimum. The catch: This doesn't apply to third-party sellers (or oversized items and freight orders). To determine which items are eligible, look for that Sold and shipped by Walmart.com Label on product pages. To filter your search for suitable items, click on All Filters > Dealers on a results page and check the box next to Walmart.
6. Find your medication

If you're spending a fortune on drugs, Walmart+ might be able to save you some money. Certain prescriptions are free for members, with savings of up to 85% on other medications purchased through Walmart pharmacies. You will receive a digital savings card that is accessible through the Walmart mobile app and can be used to fill out prescriptions.
This is not a substitute for insurance and cannot be accepted in combination with any other coverage. According to the fine print on the website, discounts are not available in Arizona, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Dakota, Vermont, and Puerto Rico. California doesn't allow $0 drugs, but offers some for as little as $2.
To try it out, open the Walmart+ RX website, search for your medication, and enter your city or zip code to find Walmart pharmacies near you. You can also see the price of the drug in each store. You can further refine a search by switching between generic and brand names, pill form, dosage, and pill count. For example, in the screenshot above, the generic version of the cholesterol drug Lipitor is available for $15. Crestor costs $9.
7. Scan and Go Shopping

Intrigued by Amazon's Just Walk Out technology? Walmart+ offers its own version of Scan & Go. Connect a card to Walmart Pay on the store's mobile app. Then tap in a store Services > Scan & Go to start scanning objects. As you shop, the app will display a running total. Go to a self-service checkout to weigh all items sold by the pound and scan a QR code to complete payment. You'll receive an electronic receipt that a Walmart employee can check for age-restricted items like alcohol.
8. Find better gas prices

Another benefit of Walmart+ is a rebate on gas at Walmart, Murphy, and Sam's Club locations, where you can save $0.05 per gallon. Find a participating location on Walmart's interactive map. How you get the gas discount depends on which dealership you are with; Walmart's fuel website has step-by-step instructions for each one, but for Walmart and Sam's Club locations, scan a QR code at the pump. Murphy stations require a code to be entered.
