With the introduction of the Apple Watch Series 7, Apple made a point of increasing the charging speed of its smartwatch. The previous model, the Series 6, took around 60 minutes to charge from 0-80% and another 30 minutes to fully charge.

The Apple Watch Series 7 takes about 45 minutes to charge from 0-80% and another 30 minutes to reach 100%. That’s an improvement of about 33%. The main reason for this improvement is the newly included magnetic fast charging USB-C cable. This allows for wattage outputs of up to 20W via Apple’s 20W USB-C Charger, a huge increase over the standard 5W supported by other Apple Watches. Apple says you need to connect this charger and cable to an 18W, 20W, 29W, 30W, 61W, 87W, or 96W USB-C power adapter to achieve 20W charging speed.

If you own an Apple Watch SE, allow 90 minutes for a 0-80% charge and another 60 minutes to reach 100%. The company’s oldest Apple Watch still sold, the Series 3, takes 90 minutes to charge from 0-80% and another 30 minutes to reach 100%.

frequently asked Questions

Q: Can I use a faster loading brick to improve speed?
A: If you have an Apple Watch older than the 7 Series, you cannot use a faster charging brick to increase charging speed. These Apple Watches have a maximum output of 5W.

Q: Does the Apple Watch charging cable affect the charging speed?
A: Unless you have an Apple Watch Series 7, the cable you are using should not noticeably affect the charging speed.

Q: At what wattage does the Apple Watch charge?
A: Older Apple Watches charge at 5W, the Series 7 at a maximum of 20W.

Q: I have an older Apple Watch, but it charges very slowly. What should I do?
A: You might want to check if your cable is still in good condition. If it’s old and frayed, consider buying a new cable. The same goes for your loading stone. If these two factors don’t fix your watch’s slow charging, you should contact Apple directly as it could be a battery issue.
