How to keep your old number on a new iPhone

Buying a shiny new iPhone is a great feeling. All these features and cameras to experiment with can be exciting. But it's still a phone at the end of the day - so you'll want to make sure people can reach you on your existing number. Here's an easy way to keep your old number when you switch to a new iPhone.

Is my phone number linked to my iPhone?

The first thing you need to understand is that your phone number isn't actually associated with the iPhone itself, but with the SIM card you put in it. So if you don't switch carriers, all you have to do is take the SIM card out of the old iPhone and put it in the new one. Your number follows automatically as your iPhone reads it from the SIM card.

When you move networks, it's a little different, as you'll see below.

Can I use any iPhone with my SIM card?

When you buy a new iPhone directly from Apple or another retailer, it comes unlocked, which means it can work on any network. The result of this is that inserting your SIM card instantly turns it into a phone with your existing number.

If you buy an iPhone second-hand, or if a friendly family member gives it to you, you need to check if it's locked. This is usually the case when people buy contract iPhones from a carrier like T-Mobile, EE, Verizon, or AT&T. These are mostly set up (or blocked) for that particular network and if you try to use them on another, you'll get a warning that the new network isn't supported.

But no worry; It is not difficult to correct this situation. Read our guide on how to unlock an iPhone for the steps you need to get the device working.

How to keep your old number when switching to a new network provider

Things get a little more complicated when switching from one network provider to another, but it's not a Herculean task.

In the UK, the process has become much simpler in recent years with the Text-To-Switch scheme introduced by industry regulators at Ofcom. Now when you switch to a new supplier, all you have to do is text the word PAC to 65075, which automatically results in them immediately sending you the PAC code needed to switch networks while you keep your number.

Then give the PAC code to the new provider and they will make the switch while ensuring your number follows you to the new network.

Please note: You can only terminate your current contract after the agreed months have expired. So, for example, if you're on a 24-month contract, early exit means an early exit fee. These can be quite extensive, depending on how long your plan has left.

To find out your current status, log on to your network provider's website and view your account, or call the company's customer service number and inquire.

Outside the UK you should contact the new provider you wish to use and provide their customer service representatives with your existing contract account number. They should then be able to work things out for you - just remember to let them know you want to keep your number. You may also need to give them your PIN code if your existing account has one. Don't forget that you can always stop by any of the company's stores and ask for help with the process.

So there you go, the easy way to keep your number when you switch to a new device. Of course, if you're still debating which model to upgrade, take a look at our best iPhone: Which is right for you? to lead.
