How to Recover Deleted Emails from Gmail

The occasional deletion of unwanted or spam email is a great way to clean up a runaway inbox. If you accidentally delete important emails or conversations while cleaning up your Gmail inbox, we'll show you how to recover them—on mobile and PC.

The effectiveness of the techniques below may depend on the erasure period. Simply put, recently deleted emails have higher chances of recovery - the longer you wait, the lower the chances of recovery. But don't worry, you can still recover permanently deleted emails from Gmail. We'll show you how.

Recover deleted emails from Trash folder

All email service providers have their own "Trash" or "Bin" folder where deleted messages from your inbox are temporarily stored. With Gmail, deleted messages and conversations remain in the Trash folder for 30 days, after which they are permanently removed from Google's servers.

If it's been less than 30 days since an email was deleted, go to the Trash folder to view or restore the message.

Recover Deleted Emails from Trash (Web)

You can recover deleted emails from Gmail using your PC or mobile browser. If you're accessing Gmail from a computer, hover your cursor over the left sidebar to view the menu options and select More drop down button.

open that garbage folders in the sidebar.

Open the message/conversation you want to recover and select it Move to Gmail toolbar icon.

Select the folder, label or group where you want to recover the deleted email. Or use the search bar to find a group.

You'll get a notification in the bottom corner of the screen letting you know that the conversation has been moved to your favorite folder/label.

Gmail also lets you restore multiple conversations at once. Check the box next to the deleted emails you want to recover and select them Move to icon in the toolbar and select your preferred recovery folder.

Recover Deleted Emails from Trash Folder (Mobile)

Want to recover deleted emails from Gmail app, just tap Hamburger menu icon, open this garbage Folder and tap the message you want to recover.

Tap the Three dots menu icon in the top right corner of the conversation.

Choose Move to.

Choose or select the folder/group you want to move the deleted email to Plus (+) icon. in the top right corner to create a new label.

Gmail will display a success message on the screen.

To recover multiple emails in the Trash folder, tap the profile icons to select the messages.

Tap the three-dot menu icon and select Move to from the menu and choose where to move the messages to.

Contact your Google Workspace administrator

If your account is part of a Google Workspace—perhaps at work, school, or your organization—you can still recover deleted emails after 30 days. Formerly known as G Suite, Google Workspace has a control panel (called Admin Console) where users with authorized access (i.e. admins) can manage users and devices, user data, apps, etc.

Deleted emails from Google Workspace users are moved to the Trash, where they can be recovered after 30 days. However, Workspace admins have an additional 25 days to recover deleted messages from the Admin console. If you can't find a deleted message in your account's recycle bin, contact your Google Workspace admin for help.

If you manage a Google Workspace, you can easily help a standard user recover a deleted email older than 30 days. Sign in to the Google Admin console and go to user section on the home page. Locate and select the users whose emails you want to recover restore data, and select Gmail in the Application pane.

The admin console has a filter to find deleted dates by date range. Select the date range and click Restore to find and restore missing emails.

Note: Deleted emails older than 55 days are permanently removed from the Google Workspace admin console. In this case nobody - not even the administrator - can recover the deleted messages.

Contact the sender or recipient

Deleting a Gmail conversation only removes the messages from your Google Account. The other party (or parties - in group emails) still has a copy of the message/conversation. This means that if an email is deleted and is no longer available in the Trash folder or in the Google Admin console, there is a 50/50 chance that it can be recovered. You just have to hope that the sender or recipient didn't delete the message(s) as well.

Another major limitation – not knowing or remembering the email address or contact details of the sender or recipient. This makes it impossible to communicate with parties who may have a copy of the deleted email.

Contact the person who sent or received the email and ask them to resend or forward the email to you. If you don't remember the person's email address, call or text them.

To forward an email on Gmail for PC or web, right-click the message/conversation and select Forward.

Enter the email address of the recipient to dialog box and select Send.

Use Gmail message recovery tool

Google has a useful tool for recovering deleted emails from your Gmail account - especially emails deleted by an unauthorized party. Access the Gmail Message Recovery Tool in your web browser and follow the instructions on the page. Sign in to your Google account and select Continue Continue.

You may need to update your security credentials (read: password) or verify your account information. Google will scan your account for missing or lost emails and then display a recovery result. When you get a success message, Google will restore permanently deleted emails to the All Emails tab of your Gmail inbox.

Note that the Gmail Message Recovery Tool has a 50/50 chance of recovering your deleted emails as well. You may get an error message (like the one below) if Google can't recover the missing emails.

Secure and protect your email

If you have another email address, you should set up Gmail to automatically forward messages to that address. You can also set up a filter to only forward certain types of email so you don't clutter up your inbox with unnecessary messages. Let us know if you have any questions.
