How to send a fax from Gmail

I know what you're thinking. A fax machine? 2021? Yes, believe it or not, people still send faxes to each other. Whether it's the older generation still clinging to the old traditions, or government agencies refusing to go into the 21st century, faxing is far from dead. But to send a fax these days, you don't need a fax machine. Nowadays you can send a fax from Gmail. So the next time a bureaucrat asks you to fax something, do the following.

QUICK RESPONSE
To send a fax from Gmail, you first need a Google Marketplace fax service add-on. One that works quite well is Fax Plus. Sign up for an account on their website and give them access to your Gmail account. Enter the fax number as the email address and the documents as an attachment. The body of the email is the cover page.
How to send a fax from Gmail
First, search the Google Workspace Marketplace for a suitable fax service. I recommend Fax Plus.

When you install it, its icon will appear to the right of your Gmail screen. Click on it to open it.

This will now open the fax service in a sidebar to the right of your Gmail inbox. Enter the recipient's fax number on the line provided (using a + followed by the international code, followed by the rest of the number). Don't put spaces between the numbers. Then click New fax.

When clicked, a new Gmail email window will open New fax, where the fax number is formatted as an email address. The body of the email is the cover page and any documents you want to send should be added as attachments. PDF files are best. Now send the email and it will be sent as a fax via Fax Plus.

Within five minutes you should receive a confirmation email that the fax went through. In my case it only took 34 seconds.

With Fax Plus you can fax ten pages for free. Then you have to pay. The prices are very reasonable and of course it all depends on how much you want to fax each month. If you want to get a fax number to receive faxes, you need to sign up for a paid plan.
Many other fax services are available for Gmail, but we can't possibly test them all. But if you want to send someone a one-time fax, Fax Plus will do the work for you. Keep it under ten pages and you won't have to pay anything.
