The Best Apple AirPods Pro Tips and Tricks

Apple's AirPods Pro are a significant upgrade over the regular AirPods. With the base model, you can listen to your favorite music and podcasts, talk to Siri, trigger functions with a tap, check battery levels, and find them when they're missing. But with the Pro, you can get a better fit, fully improve audio quality, tweak battery charging, and take advantage of other cool features. Here are a few tips to help you get the most out of your AirPods Pro.

1. Eartip Fit Test

Fit test for earplugs

One of the downsides of the regular AirPods is that they take a one-size-fits-all approach with an in-ear design that doesn't necessarily fit all ears. If the fit is not snug, the AirPods can easily and quickly slip out of your ears. The AirPods Pro correct this flaw by switching to an in-canal design with three sets of interchangeable tips for small, medium, and large ear canal sizes.

By default, the AirPods Pro come with medium tips, but you can easily change the size. To replace the power tips, pull them firmly until they detach from the base. Position the new tips so that the center white circle meets the center black circle on the base. Then press until they click into place.

To determine which of the three ear tip sizes provide the best seal and sound, perform an ear tip fit test. To do this, attach a pair of tips to the base of both AirPods Pro. Then put both AirPods in your ears. Go to on your iPhone Settings > Bluetooth > [Your AirPods info icon] > Eartip Fit Test.

On the screen to test your earbuds, tap Continue, then tap Play Button. A short music clip will play. The app will then tell you whether your current tips are correct. If not, you'll be prompted to either adjust your tips or try a different size. Go through all three sizes until the app tells you that both AirPods have the Good Seal of Approval.

2. Change the name

Your AirPods Pro's name will appear in a variety of places, but you don't stick with it. Go to on your iPhone Settings > Bluetooth. Tap the info icon for your AirPods Pro, then tap its current name. You can then revise the existing name or delete it and create a completely new name. When you're done, tap Ready.

3. Control music with a press

Control the flow of music by squeezing the stick of your left or right AirPods Pro. To do this, press the handle with your thumb and forefinger until you hear a soft click. Press once to pause/play, press twice to skip to the next track, and press three times to skip to the beginning of your current track or to the previous track.

4. Adjust the presses

Hold Options

By default, squeezing the stem of an AirPod Pro toggles between noise-cancelling and transparency, but you can change this for either or both. Go with the AirPods Pro in your ears Settings > Bluetooth and press the info icon next to your AirPods. Under the Press and hold AirPods In the section, tap the entry for Left or Right.

Here you can keep Noise Control as an activated action when you long press, but add the off setting to the mix by tapping on the entry. Alternatively, you can change the action from Noise Control to Siri by tapping the entry for Siri at the top. As a suggestion, you could leave the sound controls on for one bud, but switch to Siri for the other.

5. Noise Cancellation

noise cancellation

The AirPods Pro offer two different listening modes that can help reduce background noise. The noise canceling feature blocks out virtually all background noise, so this feature can come in handy in a noisy environment where you want to hear your audio clearly.

Transparency mode muffles background noise so you can still hear it without it interfering with your audio. This would be a good option for public places where you still need to hear announcements or otherwise be aware of your surroundings.

You can switch between noise-cancellation and transparency mode by long-pressing the stem of either bud until you hear a tone. If you prefer to go through your iPhone, there are two options available.

Open Control Center, then press Audio Controls. Tap the icon for noise level control, then choose noise cancellation or transparency, or just tap it out to turn off noise reduction altogether. You can also go Settings > Bluetooth > [Your AirPods info icon], then tap noise cancellation, out, or transparency in the field of noise protection.

6. Optimize accessibility settings

accessibility settings

You can further control certain features of your AirPods Pro Settings > Accessibility > AirPods. Here you can change the speed required to press the sticks of your AirPods to pause, play, skip forward, or go back. You can also adjust the amount of time it takes to press the stems to change the noise-cancelling mode.

7. Improve sound quality

Headphone Accommodations

A feature introduced in iOS 14 called Headphone Accommodation improves the audio from your AirPods by boosting quieter sounds and specific frequencies. You need AirPods Pro or second generation AirPods or newer for this to work.

Go to Settings > Accessibility > Audio/Visual > Headphone Adjustments and turn on the switch. Beat Play example to hear a sample, then tune the audio for balanced tone across a frequency range, mid-frequency vocal range, or higher-frequency brightness. You can also boost quieter sounds slightly, moderately, or heavily.

Customize audio

You can try playing music, podcasts, audiobooks, or other audio files from your own library to see what settings work best for your own tastes. Alternatively, the audio output can be adjusted by tapping Custom audio setup and answer a few questions. Your audio preferences will change based on your answers.

8. Turn on Spatial Audio

spatial audio

A new feature with iOS 14 and unique to AirPods Pro is Spatial Audio, which provides head tracking and surround sound effects for supported videos. To enable this, you must be running iOS 14 or later and have updated your AirPods Pro firmware to version 3A283 or later (Settings > Bluetooth > [Your AirPods info icon] > execution).

Go to Settings > Bluetooth > [Your AirPods info icon] and type Spatial Audio. You can then toggle between stereo audio and spatial audio to hear the difference. Start a supported video now to hear spatial audio in action.

Apple TV+, Disney+, iTunes, and HBO Max all support spatial audio, so play a movie or TV show from any of these services. If you've selected a compatible video, you should now hear the audio shift in the surround sound as you move your head, body, or iPhone.

9. Share with other AirPods users

share sound

If someone else has a set of AirPods Pro, regular AirPods, or even Beats headphones, you can share your audio with them. While listening to something with your AirPods Pro, access Control Center on your iPhone and tap the AirPlay icon for the current audio.

Beat share audio and select the other AirPods or Beats set of headphones. You should then see entries for both headphones. Tap the circle for the other set to connect it. You can now control the volume for both or for each separately.

10. Turn your AirPods into a hearing aid

You can use your AirPods Pro as a hearing aid through a feature called Live Listen. First you need to add the feature to Control Center on your iPhone. Go to Settings > Control Center, and then tap the plus sign next to Listen to add it to the Control Center.

Put the AirPods Pro in your ears. Open Control Center and tap on the Hearing icon and tap on listen live to turn the feature on. Now place your phone next to the person or audio source you want to hear more clearly or loudly and the sound will amplify. Disable Live Listen by tapping on the entry in the Control Center.

11. Check the battery charge

battery charge

You can use your iPhone to check the current charge of your AirPods Pro and their charging case. Store both AirPods Pro in the case and then open the lid. A map will appear on the screen of your iPhone showing the charge level of both the case and the AirPods.

Take an AirPod out of the case and the map will change to show the charge level for each AirPod separately. Take both out of the case and the map will change again to show the charge level for the AirPods only and not the case.

Finally, you can help extend the overall battery life of your AirPods Pro by telling your earbuds to wait until they're charged above 80% before you need to use them. To try this, go to Settings > Bluetooth > [Your AirPods info icon] and turn on the switch for Optimized battery charge.

If you don't want this setting, turn the switch back off. It will ask you if you want to turn it off until tomorrow or turn it off permanently.
