Sound Quality & Microphone

The number one thing I want from an Xbox One headset is great sound. I must be immersed in the game and know where the sound is coming from. I usually play late at night and wear headphones so I don’t wake my wife or our two dogs. A traditional 7.1 surround sound system is not feasible, so I need good headphones to enjoy games.

After a simple setup, plugging in power and optical cables, and changing audio output options on my Xbox One, I was up and running.

Range is good with no interference anywhere in a fairly large basement playroom or even the adjoining room. I can walk upstairs and into a kitchen and still hear what’s going on, but there are a few pops at this point. That’s to be expected when walking up a floor and through walls.

There’s a downward-swinging microphone that can be bent closer or farther away from your mouth, depending on your needs. Flipping it all the way up mutes the microphone. Friends report that I sound good when I speak into the mic, and I’ve had no complaints when responding to angry Black Ops 3 players about the quality of my voice.

Unlike the Turtle Beach Stealth 500X and Elite 800X, there is no wireless chat for the Xbox One. You need to connect the included chat adapter to your controller. This even fits newer controllers with a 3.5mm jack and the Xbox One Elite Controller. Astro says these will also work with the PS4 for wireless audio and chat. You can also use these with Mac or PC.

The controls on the right side of the headset make it easy to balance game and chat audio. Once you find the perfect mix, you can talk and play without the announcer or game audio drowning out teammates or friends.

The Astro A50 Xbox One headset offers microphone monitoring so you can hear yourself while you talk and play, but it’s not perfect. Sometimes it’s very quiet unless you put the mic to your lips.

Plugging the Astro Chat cable into the headphones and controller, turning on the controller, and then turning on the headphones often results in perfect mic monitoring, but this is a dance you don’t have to do every time you play.

The Astro A50 Wireless Xbox One Headset looks impressive, with exposed cables in some areas and a clean overall look. The build quality is very impressive. After several weeks of use, I have no worries about these breaking even with heavy gameplay.

If you need to carry the headset from one place to the next, it’s quite a bulky package to take with you. These certainly feel like an Xbox One headset that you set up in your gaming room and leave there most of the time. The average user won’t want to take these to a friend’s house every weekend. With a padded headband and ear cups, the Astro A50 Wireless Xbox One Headset is comfortable to wear for long periods of time. Unlike the old model I replaced, the Astro A50 doesn’t leave an earache after a two or three hour gaming session.

Astro A50 battery life

The Astro A50’s battery life is quoted at 10 hours by the company, and that’s pretty close to what you’ll get, but keep in mind that you might be charging closer to the nine-hour mark.

There is no battery life indicator LED to check how much power is left at the end of a gaming session. When the battery is low, the headphone LED will flash and a beep will interrupt any game you’re trying until you give up and plug it in. I’ve made it a habit to plug in an outlet for charging at least every other time I play. For $300, Astro should come with a little voice prompt announcing battery life when you turn on the headset.

Is the Astro A50 headset worth the $299 price tag? If you play most of your games with an Xbox One headset and want immersive sound, they’re definitely worth it. Being able to hear where an opponent is while playing a first person shooter is a great asset and can help you become a better player.
