What’s better than a plain map? A 3D map, of course.
If you know how to make Google Maps 3D, you can get breathtaking views of natural features or famous landmarks.
Google Maps offers 3D maps of the entire planet. However, editing a 3D map can be quite graphics intensive, so the default mode is usually 2D.
If you want to view your maps in 3D, here’s what you need to do.
How to create Google Maps 3D on desktop
If you’re using a desktop, you should be able to see Google Maps in 3D with just a few clicks.
To create Google Maps 3D on desktop:
- Open your browser and navigate to the Google Maps website.
- Click on layers in the lower left area of your map.
- Click on More.
- Click on satellite and take care of it globe view is checked. If this option is greyed out, see the next section for a possible solution.
- Click on 3D bottom right of the map screen.
- Your map is now displayed in 3D.
- If you want to return to a 2D view, click the same button that says now 2D.
You can drag around and zoom in and out just like the 2D map. You should be able to create Google Maps 3D on most major browsers including Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox.
How to enable hardware acceleration in Chrome
If you can’t enable globe view, you can’t create Google Maps 3D. One of the most common reasons why you cannot enable this feature is that hardware acceleration needs to be enabled. We recommend using Google Chrome to do this.
To enable hardware acceleration in Chrome:
- Tap the three dots icon in the top right corner of your browser window.
- Click on settings.
- Click on Progressive.
- Under the Progressive Settings, click system.
- Make sure the Use hardware acceleration when available Switch is set to the right.
- Click on reboot to restart Chrome after changing this setting.
You should now be able to follow the steps outlined in the section above to turn on the 3D effect.
How to create Google Maps 3D on mobile devices
If you want to create Google Maps 3D on your smartphone, you won’t get the same experience as on a desktop. This is because the smartphone app only offers standard 3D views in view mode.
To create Google Maps 3D on your mobile device:
- Launch the Google Maps app.
- Click on that card type Symbol.
- Now click 3D. Note that when you are inside satellite or terrain view, click 3D switches to automatically default Outlook.
- Shading is now added to some objects for a subtle 3D effect.
As you can see, this isn’t nearly as impressive as the 3D satellite imagery on the desktop. However, there is a way to achieve the same effect on a smartphone.
How to view maps in 3D on a smartphone with Google Earth
The Google Maps app may not offer 3D satellite imagery on a smartphone, but the Google Earth app does.
This is how it works:
- Install and launch the Google Earth for iOS or Android.
- Tap the Seek Symbol.
- Enter the location you want to view and select the appropriate result.
- The app will jump to the location you selected.
- If the view isn’t already in 3D, tap 3D.
- Your view will now be in 3D.
