We’ve spent a week on the iPhone 6 iOS 9.0.1 update and today we want to take a look at how it works and tell you if we think it’s worth installing before the iOS 9.1 update.

On September 16, Apple released iOS 9.0, the update unveiled at WWDC 2015 in June. The update brought tons of new features and improvements to the iPhone 6, including a rumored increase in battery life.

A week later, Apple released a new iOS 9 update called iOS 9.0.1. iOS 9.0.1 update focuses on fixing issues left by iOS 9.0 update. The changelog includes fixes for APN issues and broken alarms and timers. It’s a tiny update, but as we’ve pointed out many times before, it’s an important one.

We’ve been using the iPhone 6 iOS 9.0.1 update for about a week now. I used it on the AT&T iPhone 6 and my co-workers used it on Verizon. Today we want to provide some more feedback on the performance of the update.

This iOS 9.0.1 update review will not focus on iOS 9 features. Instead, I will focus on five key areas of the update’s performance: apps, battery life, connectivity, bugs and issues, and speed. If you’re looking for details on iOS 9 update features, take a look at our walkthrough.

I would also like to point out that iOS update mileage always varies, even small ones like iOS 9.0.1. You probably use different apps and you probably don’t use your iPhone 6 the same way I do. That would be weird if you did.

I mention this because I want this to serve as a general guide. I strongly encourage you to find more feedback on the iOS 9.0.1 update if you need it. I’ll do my best to point you in the right direction, but you might want to dig a little deeper before installing or before taking your phone to an Apple Store for fixes.

Over the past week I’ve seen complaints about various apps and services. iOS 9.0.1 seems to cause problems for some iPhone 6 users.

I have over 100 apps on my iPhone 6 but I don’t use them all. My top apps include Asana, Slack, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Gmail, Hangouts, Chrome, Dark Sky, Amazon, SoundCloud, Spotify, and Xbox One Smartglass.

For the most part, these applications have been constant. Chrome has crashed 10-15 times in the last week, which is normal and better than the 50+ times it crashed during my week running iOS 9.0. Twitter has crashed a few times, as has The Weather Channel app.

Random crashes are part of the game and they were rare enough. I can handle a few crashes in a week but not 50+. I was so close to switching to safari.

Two fixes that always seem to work for me: reinstalling applications and restarting the phone. A hard reboot requires you to press and hold the power button and home button for 10 seconds. Before you throw your iPhone 6 off a cliff, try these things (and our other fixes).

iOS 9.0.1 battery life on iPhone 6

While iOS 9 brought some noticeable battery life improvements to my iPhone 6, I can’t say I got an hour of boost with iOS 9.0 or iOS 9.0.1. Are they slightly better than iOS 8? Probably, but it’s not night and day.

Battery life with iOS 9.0.1 on board is the same as with iOS 9.0 on board: Excellent. I can use the phone for a full day when using a combination of Wi-Fi and LTE, mostly Wi-Fi. I start using my iPhone 6 at 8am and usually don’t put it down until 11pm. I can still do this with iOS 9.0.1 on board.

I haven’t noticed any strange battery drain when the phone is in use or when it’s on standby. The phone still holds an incredible charge when not in use, and that’s important, especially on the weekends when I’m interacting with people rather than my phone.

WiFi, LTE and Bluetooth

iOS 9.0.1 users are complaining about connection issues. Some people have problems with Bluetooth, others have problems with Wi-Fi. I have no problems with either of them.

Over the past week I’ve been testing the iPhone 6 and iOS 9.0.1 on a variety of different routers and Bluetooth devices. Some borrowed from me, some from people I know. My iPhone 6 connected to all of these routers (Verizon FiOS routers, Archer C9, Belkin, etc.) and paired to all of these Bluetooth devices (Motorola Bluetooth headset, Bose SoundLink Mini, Toyota Prius, etc.).

Download and upload speeds are normal and I was able to play music and take calls with these Bluetooth devices.

AT&T’s network still works well in the areas I visit most often. LTE and 4G both work fine. So is GPS for that matter.

Problems with iOS 9

There are iOS 9.0.1 issues affecting iPhone 6 devices. Apple’s discussion forums are full of complaints. During my time with iOS 9.0.1 on the iPhone 6 I encountered only one noticeable bug. Unfortunately very annoying.

For some reason my iPhone 6 keeps crashing occasionally. I can no longer use swipe gestures or gestures that make it impossible to access apps and folders or turn off the phone. It’s happened 3 times since Thursday and it’s starting to drive me crazy.

There is a solution, you have to restart the phone using the home and power buttons, but it was still frustrating to deal with.

Otherwise I didn’t notice anything big. Minor bugs might be lurking around, but none of them have affected my daily routine, at least not yet.

UI speed

Aside from random locks, iOS 9.0.1 on iPhone 6 is extremely fast. Animations and transitions are smooth and I didn’t see any random lag on my device. iPhone 6 hardware can handle iOS 9 update.

Should you install the iOS 9.0.1 update?

Every situation is a little different, but I’ll say that.

If you are affected by any of these issues on iOS 9.0, iOS 9.0.1 is probably worth downloading now as hopefully the update will fix these issues for good.

If you want to protect your iPhone 6 from potential exploits, iOS 9.0.1 might be worth downloading as it comes with several patches.

If you don’t care about these or security patches and have good experience with iOS 9.0, you can consider waiting. Apple’s next major update is iOS 9.1 and it should be about a month away from release.

I’ve encountered a few issues with iOS 9.0.1, but nothing that makes me regret my switch to iOS 9 or the iOS 9 update altogether. I still think the positives of iOS 9 outweigh the potential for problems, but if you’re concerned, wait for iOS 9.1. We’re hearing it could bring nice performance improvements.

Keep an eye on iOS 9 downgrade

The first thing that should be on your radar is downgrading from iOS 9. And the reason it should be on your radar is because Apple could stop opting out of iOS 8.4.1 update and iOS 9.0 update at any time to unsubscribe. Apple still signs iOS 8.4.1 and iOS 9.0 updates, which means you can downgrade from iOS 9.0.1 to iOS 9.0 or iOS 8.4.1. If you’re still using iOS 9.0, you can downgrade to iOS 8.4.1 if you have problems. While it would be nice if Apple left the downgrade loophole open forever, that’s not going to happen. The company usually closes up shop after a week or two. And now that we’re two weeks away from the iOS 9.0 release, those downgrades could end at any moment. So, if you are not satisfied with iOS 9.0.1 or iOS 9.0 and think you would be happier with an older iOS version, it is better to deal with the downgrade process sooner rather than later.
