Apple’s iPhone 5 iOS 9.2.1 update is finally here, and today we want to take a look at how it’s performing in key areas like battery life, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and UI speed.

Last year, Apple confirmed an iOS 9.2.1 update for the iPhone 5. The update remained in beta for several weeks while Apple, developers, and the general public tested it for bugs and issues.

Today Apple decided it was ready for primetime and the iPhone iOS 9.2.1 update is now available for users in the United States and abroad.

As expected, the iOS 9.2.1 update is a minor update for the iPhone 5 and Apple’s other iOS devices. That means it doesn’t bring great features to the aging former flagship. Instead, it brings security patches and bug fixes.

Small updates can have a big impact on a device’s performance, and that’s why I’m taking a close look at iOS 9.2.1 update on iPhone 5.

The iOS 9.2.1 update is only a few hours old, but I’d like to give you some early feedback on its performance on the aging former flagship. But first, let’s have a look at the iOS 9.2.1 installation process on iPhone 5.

iOS 9.2.1 installation

If you come from iOS 9.2, iOS 9.2.1 update will be small. 20MB small. That’s tiny for an iOS update.

While the download process only took a minute or two, the installation process took much longer. I timed the install and it took about eight minutes to complete. That’s a bit unusual for an update of this size.

I would allow 10-15 minutes if coming from iOS 9.2, more if coming from something older.

I haven’t heard of any server issues or problems with the iOS 9.2.1 installation process. If you encounter any problem, I recommend you to hold down the home button and the power button for a few seconds until the iPhone 5 restarts. This should speed up the download or installation.

iOS 9.2.1 performance

The iPhone 5 iOS 9.2.1 update does not come with a long list of features. Instead, it comes with a vague changelog focused on bug fixes and security updates.

I would like to point out two things before I go into this. First, it’s possible (and probable) that things will change in the coming hours, days, or even weeks. And second, I’m only one person with one version of the iPhone 5. If you’re still suspicious, dig into additional iOS 9.2.1 feedback. I encourage it.

applications

I’ve been using the iPhone 5 iOS 9.2.1 update for a few hours now and so far apps are working great.

While there is still a small lag when opening on the iPhone 5, I have no issues with the apps themselves.

My core apps (Asana, Slack, YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, Gmail, Hangouts, Chrome, Dark Sky, Amazon, SoundCloud, Spotify, and Xbox One Smartglass) all run fine with the built-in iOS 9.2.1 update. That could change at any time, but for now the performance is excellent.

I can’t speak for every single app on the App Store, so make sure you dig into app reviews by iOS 9.2.1 users if you’re nervous.

I haven’t heard of any app issues related to iOS 9.2.1, but it’s early days so you should be very careful.

iOS 9.2.1 battery life

The battery life of my iPhone 5 is still in great shape.

After three years and countless updates, you might think that the battery is showing signs of aging. Not my iPhone 5, not this battery.

The battery life of iOS 9.2 was excellent and I didn’t notice any difference after installing the iOS 9.2.1 update on my iPhone 5.

Can’t comment on the long-term battery life yet, but the short-term looks good. I haven’t experienced any strange drain since downloading iOS 9.2.1.

If you’re concerned or already encountering problems, take a look at our list of fixes. There’s a good chance it’s your bad habits or a rogue app that’s causing the problems, not iOS 9.2.1

Wi-Fi, Cellular Data, and Bluetooth

I have an AT&T iPhone 5 and so far the AT&T LTE and 4G networks are working fine with iOS 9.2.1 on board. Connections seem stable and fast, and that’s all you can ask for after downloading a new iOS update.

I’ve tested the software with several different routers and haven’t encountered any issues with Wi-Fi. Like LTE, it is stable and fast with iOS 9.2.1 on board. The same applies to Bluetooth.

I’ve tested the iPhone iOS 9.2.1 update with several different Bluetooth devices, including Bluetooth speakers and headphones, and I’ve encountered no issues. Par for the course.

Connectivity issues can arise at any time, so I’ll keep my list of fixes tight in case I need them. At the moment iOS 9.2.1 update is stable.

Problems with iOS 9.2.1

I didn’t encounter any experience-breaking issues during my time with iOS 9.2.1 update. There are problems with iOS 9.2.1, but I haven’t seen any myself, at least not yet.

Minor bugs and issues can be hard to spot, so I’ll keep digging in the coming hours. I’ll let you know if I find anything.

I noticed a lag in the keyboard and also when pulling down to access notifications and pulling up to access the control center.

Control center lag is actually a fairly common issue for iPhone 5 users and my device seems to have fallen victim to it in the early days.

Scrolling my home screens still feels fast and smooth, and I haven’t noticed any slowdown when opening my various folders.

So far a mixed bag.

Should You Install iPhone 5 iOS 9.2.1 Update?

The iPhone 5 iOS 9.2.1 update is small, but the security patches and fixes make it one worth your attention.

However, my advice is to wait a day or two for the smoke to clear, especially if you’re coming from anything older than iOS 9.2.

I suspect this delay will wear off after a day or two, but I’m not sure. If you absolutely must have iOS 9.2.1 now, please be careful.

Since this is a small incremental update, it doesn’t bring much to the table, but that doesn’t mean you can or should blindly install the update.

The iOS 9.2.1 update includes “security updates and bug fixes, including a fix for an issue that could prevent app installation from completing when using an MDM server.” For more information on troubleshooting MDM, see the Apple website.

Familiarize yourself with the iOS 9.2.1 changelog now.

If you’re coming from a version of iOS that isn’t called iOS 9.2, you’ll also get the changes made aboard the iOS 9.2 update, so it might be wise to familiarize yourself with those features as well. If you’re coming from anything older than iOS 9, do the same.
