Have you got yourself a new Microsoft Surface in the last few days? The Surface is definitely an interesting new tablet, especially when you pair it with the new Touch Cover and Type Cover to use with it. The touch cover is particularly cool since it doesn’t even really have buttons like a regular keyboard.

Type touch cover

Microsoft recently released a series of ads focusing on the “click” sound made when attaching a Type or Touch cover to the Surface. It’s a reassuring click to let you know your keyboard is connected properly. The annoying click sound is when you tap on the touch cover and Windows plays a click sound that makes you feel like you’re using a keyboard with real keys. I guess some people will like this because it helps them figure out if they actually pressed a key or not.

However, after a few hours of typing, I quickly got annoyed with the whole fake clicking sound. Luckily you can get rid of it. It immediately reminded me of the days when Internet Explorer made that annoying clicking sound when you refreshed a web page or clicked a link.

Disable the clicking sound

If you want to disable the clicking sound when typing on the Touch Cover or Type Cover, do the following in Windows 8. Below I also explain how to do this in Windows 10. First you have to swipe left from the right side of the device to bring up the Magic Bar.

Now you want to tap Change PC settings at the bottom.

Now you want to click General on the left side and scroll down until you see Touch keyboard. Here an option is called Play key tones while I typeto which you can switch On to Out of.

In Windows 10, click Settings on the Start menu and then click Devices.

Click on Tap in the left pane, and then go to the section titled Touch keyboard. You will see them Play key tones while I type option there.

That’s all! Note that if you’re using Windows on a PC and the on-screen keyboard is enabled, clicking sounds will also play when you press the keys. You can turn off the clicking sound there by clicking options key on the keyboard.

Now you can simply remove the tick Use click sound check box.

Once you get used to the new Microsoft Surface keyboards, you’ll find that you really don’t need those extra clicks to type properly. Have fun with your new Surface!
