(Pocket-lint) – Amazon has updated its Echo Show 8 and Echo Show 5 in 2021 with some new features coming to both models.

Here we look at how the second-gen Echo Show 8 compares to the old Echo Show 8. Read on to find out the differences and help you make a purchasing decision.

As with the new Echo Show 5, much of the new Echo Show 8 remains the same. The two devices share the same design and both come in Charcoal and Glacier White color options.

Both measure 200.4 x 135.9 x 99.1mm, both have a power connector on the back of the fabric-covered speaker base and both have an 8-inch display. There is a camera shutter switch on both devices, along with four microphones, volume buttons, and a microphone on/off switch.

However, you will notice that the camera aperture is square on the new model while it is round on the older model.

The two devices also offer all the same features in terms of Alexa and everything that comes with Alexa, like weather reports, jokes, games, shopping lists and much more, while music streaming and video streaming is also the same on both models.

What is the difference between the new Echo Show 8 and the old Echo Show 8?

However, there are some differences between the new Echo Show 8 and the old Echo Show 8.

Front camera

The new Echo Show 8 has a 13-megapixel front-facing camera with pan and zoom capabilities that follows you around the room like the Echo Show 10, iPad Pro, and Facebook Portal.

The old Echo Show, in comparison, has a 1-megapixel front camera and doesn’t offer pan and zoom functionality, so the new model is definitely the right choice if you intend to make a lot of video calls.

The second-gen Echo Show features a processor leap compared to the older model. It has an 8-core processor in the MediaTek 8183, while the older model has a four-core processor in the MediaTek 8163. The new Echo Show 8 shares the same processor as the latest Echo Show 10.

3.5mm audio output

This was removed from the 2021 Echo Show 8. So if you want to connect to existing audio gear, you’ll need the older model.

Environmentally friendly

The second-generation Echo Show 8 is “Climate Pledge Friendly,” like the Echo Show 5, with 30 percent recycled plastic, 100 percent recycled fabric, and 100 percent recycled die-cast aluminum.

The packaging of the new Echo Show 8 also consists of 99 percent wood fibers.

Conclusion

The Amazon Echo Show 8 (2021) is a bit more expensive than its predecessor, but it has a major front camera upgrade, not only in terms of resolution, but also in terms of the features it offers that add pan and zoom.

It also has a more powerful processor under the hood and is more environmentally friendly – although it loses the 3.5mm connection.

Of course, you’ll save a little money if you buy the older model, and you get many of the same features in terms of Alexa, as well as the same audio capabilities, but you’re missing out on the camera tech and faster processor.
