Read our early iOS 8.2 review on the iPhone 6 Plus to decide whether you should install this major update now or wait until the April Apple Watch release date gets closer.

Apple’s iOS 8.2 update came in the afternoon of March 9, after the Apple Watch event. The update features a number of bug fixes, increased stability, and installs the Apple Watch app, which is required to pair with an Apple Watch and install Apple Watch apps. At the moment you can only watch Apple Watch videos, but this will give you control over what’s on your Apple Watch once this version arrives.

After a long beta test, iOS 8.2 update is now available for all devices running iOS 8. The free update is easy to install while connected to Wi-Fi, and there’s a long list of bug fixes.

The iOS 8.2 update is a major upgrade that includes dozens of listed fixes and many other improvements that Apple does not list in the What’s New list in the iOS 8.2 changelog. With major updates like this, some users are more concerned about performance and the impact on older devices. On a new device like the iPhone 6 Plus, those concerns aren’t as great, but after a botched iOS update last year, even new iPhone users read iOS 8.2 reviews before installing it.

After spending several hours testing the iOS 8.2 update on the iPhone 6 Plus, it’s time to share our early iOS 8.2 review to help users decide if it’s still worth it update today.

Here are our first impressions of the iOS 8.2 update on the iPhone 6 Plus.

iOS 8.2 installation

Use our iOS 8.2 update guide for a complete guide on how to install iOS 8.2 update on any device without connecting to a computer. In less than half an hour I was able to download and install the iOS 8.2 update. This time depends on your connection speed. This is a big update, so prepare to wait if you’re on a slow connection. Use our iOS 8.2 release tips to prepare your iPhone 6 Plus for the update.

Installing iOS 8.2 on iPhone 6 Plus took longer than my iPhone 6, but it restarted after a few minutes with no issues or missing apps. The new Apple Watch app installs on the main home screen and moves a frequently used app to another page, but that’s an easy fix.

iOS 8.2 on iPhone 6 Plus performance

This is an early review of iOS 8.2 update specifically for iPhone 6 Plus. Keep in mind that your experience with different apps, accessories, and use cases may differ slightly from mine. The odds of us using the same apps and iPhone 6 Plus accessories are slim, and these things come together to bring the performance and stability of iOS 8.2 to our devices.

applications

After installing the iOS 8.2 update, I tested some of my favorite iPhone 6 Plus apps to see how they handled the new update. After testing Facebook, Messages, Safari, Gmail, and Netflix, I ran into no issues. I updated all apps on iPhone 6 Plus after installing iOS 8.2. Ideally, you should update before installing the update, but if you run into any issues, it’s best to make sure you’re running the latest version of the app. Other apps like Slack, Asana, LastPass, Hangouts, and Alien Blue perform well in quick tests tonight.

iOS 8.2 battery life

It’s too early to make bold claims about iOS 8.2 battery life on iPhone 6 Plus, but the good sign is that there aren’t any big changes. Usually, when the battery is rapidly draining and overheating without using the app abnormally, a problem will quickly arise. That’s not the case, but I need more testing to give a full review of iOS 8.2 battery life.

Wi-Fi, Cellular Data, and Bluetooth

iOS updates big and small can cause major connectivity issues, so I’ll test this once the installation is complete. FaceTime and regular calls work fine and the iPhone rings when I receive a call on another iPhone with the same Apple ID. AirDrop works fine on a Mac and on another iPhone. The AT&T LTE connection is strong and the iPhone 6 Plus shows up as a hotspot on my MacBook Pro Retina.

The WiFi connection is good on the home network and when connected to another phone acting as a hotspot. Bluetooth works well and connects instantly to a Bluetooth headset.

bugs & problems

So far I haven’t had any issues, bugs or issues with iOS 8.2 on iPhone 6 Plus. This is expected on a new device, but all is not clear yet. In the next few days I will be testing the iPhone 6 Plus iOS 8.2 update for issues that may arise with prolonged use.

speed

It’s no surprise that the iPhone 6 Plus iOS 8.2 update doesn’t slow down the device. I can’t see any speed difference from iOS 8.1.3 to iOS 8.2 on this device. This is to be expected with a new iPhone, but we’ll be watching for performance changes that come after extended use.
